On behalf of the board of Trustees, thank you for your interest in the CEO role at Action on Elder Abuse (AEA). This is an exciting but challenging time for AEA as we seek to build on the significant growth and development of the charity over recent years.

We need to continue our ground-breaking work as the only charity covering England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales focusing exclusively on preventing and ameliorating the abuse of Older People whilst expanding our funding streams and developing services in the four nations appropriate to local priorities.

Our current CEO has been with the charity for nearly twenty years and has made a very positive impact on the charity. He has now decided to take his well-deserved retirement and he goes with our very best wishes.

We are at a pivotal point in our journey which provides an opportunity for an energetic and inspirational leader to join us and make a real difference.

Dr John Beer OBE., Chair of Trustees

Gary FitzGerald, D.Sc (h.a)., M.A. Chief Executive

I have been honoured to lead the charity for the last eighteen years and I have seen it grow and develop over that time. There have been both positive highlights and definite challenges during that period and we have made progress in many key areas, albeit never enough (in my view) and never with a sufficient sense of urgency from those with the power to make a difference.

Sadly, we still have much to do. Over 1 million older people still experience abuse in the UK today so the work of the charity is far from over. But today it has a strong Trustee Board driving it forward, and an exceptionally good staff group in all four nations of the UK. I am confident it will continue to speak and act independently and will continue to make its voice heard on behalf of all those older victims of elder abuse who have no voice.

We are now looking to recruit my successor and you will find a recruitment pack in the accompanying section. The role of CEO for AEA is a unique one that I have found hugely responsible but also hugely rewarding. It gives tremendous scope to make a real difference for so many people. I would encourage all those with a passion to challenge injustice to seriously consider this opportunity and to grasp it firmly. I am confident you would never regret it. For I have certainly never done so.

Good luck,

Gary FitzGerald
