Action4Advocacy

The A4A website provides you with a daily updated snapshot of the latest news and articles of interest to the advocacy sector.

 

Age Concern England

Offers information and advice, on a wide range of issues. Local groups are listed in the telephone directory under Age Concern. Some offer advocacy services.

 

Age Action Ireland

are a community based older people's organisation which is networked across Ireland.  They campaign on issues of ageing, produce a regular bulletin and have an extensive library (the largest of its type in the Republic)

 

Alcohol Concern

A national agency on alcohol misuse, working to reduce the incidence and costs of alcohol related harm and to increase the range and quality of services available to people with alcohol related problems.  Provides a useful factsheet (No. 33) on Alcohol and Older People.

 

Ann Craft Trust

A national organisation working with staff in the statutory, independent and voluntary sectors in the interests of people with learning disabilities who may be at risk from abuse.  They are a major partner with AEA.

 

Arthritis Care

Arthritis Care is the only UK-based voluntary organisation working with and for everyone with arthritis.  They provide information, training and support to help people take control of their health and their lives. At the same time they campaign for raised awareness about arthritis, and for better services for people affected.

 

An Bord Altranais

was established by the Nurses Act, 1950 to take over the functions of two bodies, the Central Midwives Board and the General Nursing Council, which had been established in 1918 and 1919 respectively. An Bord Altranais was re-constituted and its functions were re-defined and expanded by the Nurses Act, 1985.  It is the Irish equivalent of the Nursing and Midwifery Council

 

BrendonCare

is a charity dedicated to improving the quality of life for older people.  They provide caring services and operate within a published philosophy.

 

British Association for Service to the Elderly

BASE (British Association for Service to the Elderly)  provides education, training and consultancy services for those working with older people and other adults who need care or support.  They also organise conferences and study days and publish the journal Quality in Ageing four times per year, in addition to training resource packs. 

 

Care Directions

provides a guide to care and the rights of older people in the UK.   The objective of the site is to empower people with the information they need to make truly informed, effective choices - to give them control in their lives, or the lives of their loved ones.  Includes sections on staying at home, care homes, sheltered housing, the role of social services, hospital discharges, complaints procedures, funding choices, and financial planning.

 

Care Standards Inspectorate for Wales 

The Care Standards Act received Royal Assent in July 2000 and provides the powers for the National Assembly for Wales (the Assembly) to establish a new comprehensive social and health care regulator — the Care Standards Inspectorate for Wales (CSIW).

Carers UK

Carers UK is the voice of carers and the leading campaigning, policy and information organisation for carers.   Their work involves raising awareness at all levels of government and society of the needs of carers and ensuring action is taken to support them;  informing, providing information and advice to carers, enabling them to make their own choices about providing care. Free booklets for carers on all aspects of carers;  supporting, helping carers become more aware of their own role and status in the community, supporting them through a network of local branches.

 

Centre for Policy on Ageing

An independent organisation promoting social policies that allow older people to achieve the full potential of their later years.

 

Citizens Advice Bureau

runs ‘Adviceguide’ which  gives basic advice and information on people’s rights.  It gives a broad outline of your legal position what you can do.  If problems are complicated, it is more appropriate to contact Citizen’s Advice Bureaux (directions are available on site)

Community and District Nursing Association

The online face of a professional association representing around 5,500 district nurses and community health practitioners.  A partner organisation of AEA

 

Connects 

is a worldwide, interactive, personalised forum for the sharing of information by people interested in mental health problems and/or learning disabilities.  It contains more than 8,000 resources including details of news items, events, websites and organisations.

 

Counsel and Care

provides direct services to older people that give them the support needed to make informed choices. They do this by providing advice, information and casework;
providing and developing new services that increase choice; providing training and support that improves the quality of care; and advocating for improvements in laws and services affecting older people

 

Criminal Records Bureau

CRB is an executive agency of the Home Office set up to help organisations make safer recruitment decisions. It provides access to criminal record information and the Protection of Vulnerable Adults list, helping employers in the public, private and voluntary sectors identify candidates who may be unsuitable for certain work.

 

Darlington Domestic Violence Unit

an excellent site, containing much information of general relevance to the subject of domestic violence, as well as information specific to Darlington

 

Dementia Web

Based at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, London, this site includes a virtual carer support chat room, together with information on the Dementia Research Group and International Working Group on Harmonisation of Dementia Drug Guidelines.

 

Disabled Living Foundation

Provides specialist advice for people with disabilities and their carers.

 

Disability Rights Commission

was set up by the government to help secure civil rights for people with disabilities. As well as giving information and advice to disabled people, employers and service providers, their conciliation service also intervene in disputes over access to goods and services.
