The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
15 June 2006

Information on what organisations did for World Elder Abuse Day 2006

 

Liz Lynne MEP (West Midlands, Liberal Democrat), as co-president of the European Parliament Intergroup (All-party) group on Ageing, will chair the 14 June meeting of the Intergroup at the European Parliament in Strasbourg to publicise the World Elder Abuse Awareness day of 15 June and it is expected that this pan European group of MEPs will propose an official European Parliamentary question to the European Commission, calling for better research and awareness and funding to address elder abuse.

 

Southern Ireland
A Public Lecture: Situating Elder Abuse within a human rights perspective.  Speaker: Professor William Binchy, Law School , Trinity College Dublin .  Venue: Camden Court Hotelt , Lower Camden St ,D2 11.00am Dublin.

The Lord  Mayor of Dublin will be signing  a declaration on Elder Abuse on June 14 at 11.00am in the Oaks Room of The Mansion House..

There will be a Media campaign: on TV, radio and newspapers.

There will be Intergenerational promotion of positive images of older people on Children's television, and RTE 2.

Local focus days/discussions on combating elder abuse in differing environments: long stay care, community, respite.  

Wales

The South East Wales Forum for the Protection of Vulnerable Adults is holding an event to mark the first World Elder Abuse Awareness Day.  We have planned to hold a conference on the afternoon of 15th June. Guest speakers to include;

Margaret Haywood, the Panorama Undercover Nurse Investigator and Tivoli Wallington from The CPS.

Just before the conference we are holding a balloon race.  The launch of  500 purple balloons will take place at 1.15, by Roy Noble from Radio Wales.  The proceeds from the balloon race will be sent to AEA

 

Local Authority

Sue Hollins and volunteers from the London Borough of Sutton will be running a stall on 15 June 2006 in the St Nicolas Shopping Centre, Sutton High Street, Sutton, Surrey, to raise awareness and collect money.

On 15 June at Ealing Town Hall , between 11.00am and 2.00pm there will be an Expert Question Panel, information stalls and light refreshments.

Worcestershire County Council  

are having 5 balloon launches across Worcestershire in:

* Evesham

* Pershore

* Worcester

* Redditch

* Bromsgrove.

200 printed balloons will be launched at each site. These locations will have a photographer and councillor present at the time of lift off - meaning wide media coverage for our area.

Our Adult Protection Co-ordinator (Jill Hawes) will be on the Hereford and Worcester radio station today talking about the campaign.

There will also be displays across the county raising awareness about adult abuse. Locations include: shopping centres, community centres, GP surgeries and residential homes. Some of our volunteers will talk with the public face-to-face to discuss the issues.

We have been very lucky to have proactive and dedicated volunteers to drive this issue forward.

 

Liverpool City Council have distributed 4000 purple campaign ribbons across the city to the local PCTs, acute hospitals, police and to all of the Council One Stop Shops.  In addition to the ribbons there are posters and leaflets.  There has been a press release and a radio interview with the elected member of the City Council with responsibility for Social Services

Ceredigion, Aberdeen - Adult Protection Unit - 15 June, 10-4pm. will be having a stand in Abryswyth. 

Mary Wynne, Adult Protection Co-ordinator, Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea will hand out leaflets at two tube stations on the day (High St Kensington and South Kensington ), send out publicity posters to libraries and other public venues using AEA logos etc., send out posters and leaflets to GP's and other health settings, and do a Press Release

Mary Killoughery, London Borough of Lambeth, 16 Castle House, Wilcox Close, London .  On 15 June, at 2pm , there will be a Fashion Parade.

Sue Kendrick, Adult Protection Unit, Olicana House, Chapel St, Bradford.  On 15 June, all Day, there will be an Awareness Day.

Karen Littleford – Adult Protection Training and Development Worker, Shropshire Partners in Care, will be having an information stand in Morrisons Supermarket in Whitchurch St, Shrewsbury, Shropshire

Pete Morgan, AP co-ordinator in Coventry is organising a stall with information, leaflets etc. at Tescos in Coventry all day on 15th.

Mick Collins, AP co-ordinator in Powys is organising a series of events throughout the week commencing 12th June. This will include a public information minibus touring throughout Powys and also a survey of public perceptions about abuse that will be held throughout the county.

Milton Keynes local authority are using the 15 June to present their first Area Adult Protection Committee Annual Report. At the same event they have planned to have a drama group from the University of the Third Age called The Third Age Players, perform a short scene highlighting elder abuse.

Bexley Care Trust, Hall Place, Crayford, Dartford – on 15 June will be holding two awareness workshops between 10am and 4.30pm, and launching their procedures and publicity campaign.

Enfield Council, Civic Centre, Silver Street , Enfield – on 15 June will have an information stand in the reception of the civic centre.

To mark the occasion Safe and Secure in Sheffield is holding an Information Event 10am - 2pm outside the Town Hall - Peace Gardens .  Age Concern Sheffield are working in partnership with Sheffield Adult Protection Committee on ‘Safe and Secure in Sheffield’ an initiative to establish neighbourhood-based groups of older people to push for small changes that will make a big difference to the safety and security of vulnerable older people in their area.  

Gloucestershire will have a large display in their reception involving distributing poems and purple flower heads, with a radio interview and local press release.  In addition they have produced an excellent leaflet on elder abuse and where the county fits in...click here and enjoy.

Sefton plan to have input on the BBC local lunch time radio programme one week before the day in order to maximise publicity for an information stall in a large shopping precinct.  On the day the stall will be staffed from various agencies and there will be leaflets, business cards and posters to inform people of options available to them.

London Borough of Barnet will have a press release and notices on council electronic notice boards and a poster campaign throughout the borough. A stall in the Broadwalk Shopping centre in Edgware. Staff from the Police, social workers and trading standards will be available to speak to members of the public and hand out information

Northampton Borough Council The Guildhall, St Giles Square, Northampton. Will be having an information stand and at a later date coffee mornings in their various community rooms.

Commission for Social Care Inspection
Rebecca Harrison, CSCI Regulation Manager; Karen Littleford, Adult Protection Training and Development Worker; Shropshire Partners in Care; and Sarah Bland, Adult Protection Manager, Shropshire County Council, will be doing a Tandem Skydive for Action on Elder Abuse on Friday 16 June 2006 at Tilstock Airfield, Whitchurch Shropshire.  We wish them every success.

Ekta Project  
On Thursday 15 June, from 1.30pm to 3.30pm, there will be a short play in Hindi, entitled 'Band Kard' (Stop It), held at the Harley Centre, 267 Barking Rd , East Ham E6 1LB.  This is a small play written and acted by staff of Ekta Project to raise awareness. It will be in Hindi for the care group members of the Ekta Project.

Also an information stall at Stratford Shopping Mall between 10.00am and 3.30pm.

Help The Aged

They will be launching a new campaign action calling on the government to lose the loophole in the Human Rights Act.

HTA shops are also collecting signatures fro the I WIll pledge.

They are doing a photocall with MP's who have signed the elder abuse Early Day Motion. 

  


Public lecture - Sorry This lecture has been cancelled, 
The Institute of Gerontology, King's College London, in collaboration with Action on Elder Abuse, will be holding an International Public Lecture with Professor Karl Pillemer of Cornell University.  Entitled, the prevention of elder abuse, the event will occur at the Great Hall, The Strand, King's College London on 15 June 2006, 6pm.  All are welcome.

Annie Blackwell, Washington Suite, Worthing Hospital, Lyndhurst Rd, Worthing, West Sussex.  On 15 June, between 10am and 4pm, there will be a stand in the main entrance of the Hospital to raise public awareness.

South Sutton PCT NHS, Burlington House, Brosby Rd North , Waterloo , Liverpool.  On 15 June there will be an Information and Awareness stall in the community with a prize draw donated by some of the local shops.

St Helen’s and Knowsley NHS Hospitals, St Helen’s Hospital, 3rd Floor Eccleston Centre.  On 15 June, all Day, there will be an Information Day with stands and Quiz also at Whiston Hospital.

Simon Willams, Named Nurse for Vulnerable Adult Protection from Cardiff & Vale NHS Trust with a colleague will be speaking about abuse and WEAAD at the Wales Showcase Conference on 15 and 16 June. They will be wearing AEA Tshirts.

Basildon and Thurrock Universities Hospital, Basildon Hospital, Vethrmayne, Basildon Essex. 15 June. All Day. They will have a stand in their main reception to raise awareness, non uniform day and wearing purple ribbons.

St Pancras Hospital  will have an information stand in their staff canteen and a collection on the day, from 11.00am to 3.00pm.

Pontypridd & Rhondda NHS Trust, Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Ynysmaerdy, Llantrisant – on 15 June will be hosting information stands from 12.00 to 3.30pm, in conjunction with the Local Authority, Local Health board and Police Protection unit.

Others:

Accord Care and Support are holding their events at Millennium Forge in Tipton and Moxley Court in Darlaston, both Housing with Care Schemes; and Cartlidge House a Residential Home in Oakengates, Telford . Events will run throughout the day and will include guest speakers from the West Midlands Police Action on Adult Protection team who will be attending Millennium Forge and a guest speaker from The Telford and Wrekin Borough Senior Protection team to raise awareness of Elder Abuse.

Fundraising events are being held with all proceeds being donated to the “Action on Abuse” charity.

Care and Support will also launch a portable version of their Adult Protection Procedure. The user friendly leaflet will be distributed to all staff during the day.

Ashram is holding their event at Ghulab Ashram a spacious, purpose-built Housing with Care project, situated in a quiet residential street in Hall Green, Birmingham . The house has been specifically adapted for older people, with cultural needs, associated communication (language) barriers and care and support needs.

The day will commence with an opening address by Peter Hay the Director for Older Adult Services at Birmingham City Council and will be followed by a presentation featuring real life experiences of BME elders with an Indian and Chinese perspective. This will be followed by a play about elder abuse performed by service users and staff to highlight the differing forms of elder abuse.

  Jean Tompkins, Head of Care and Support at Ashram said “Tackling Elder Abuse needs to be high on all our agendas, recognition that it occurs at an alarming level is the first step to combating this social problem”

Peabody Trust's Darwin Court Community Resource Centre, 1 Crail Row, London SE17 (Tel: 020 7021 4670) are holding an event on Thurs 15th June to commemorate and to highlight Awareness on Elder Abuse Day. The day will include a talk from the Co-ordinator of Southwark's Protection of Vulnerable Adults Team, and the ERoSH Director of Policy, on "What is Abuse and How to Report It" and talks on personal safety aswell as related organisations offering information and advice stalls on issues around  Elder Abuse. is organising a free half day briefing on bogus callers and rogue traders. This event is open to anyone but maybe of particular interest to members of the public, staff from banks, building societies, care services, and statutory organisations.  This event is being organised on behalf of Kent and Medway Adult Protection Committee by Kent Adult Social Services in conjunction with Kent Police and Trading Standards.  It will be held on Thursday 15th June from 1.30 to 4.30pm in the arena at the ARK in Dover.  Click here for more information.
