Action on Elder Abuse was proud to be the lead co-ordinator in the UK and Ireland for the first ever World Elder Abuse Awareness Day in 2006 and we repeated this in 2007.  Now we are in 3rd Year and hoping to raise the awareness of elder abuse amongst the general public, practitioners and government alike on this day.

Please join us in doing an event for the day.

The need for legislation to protect vulnerable adults is obvious and crucial throughout these islands.  Within Scotland some progress is being made and it is possible that the Scots arena will move from being the country causing the greatest concern to being the leader within the UK on this issue.

Within England and Wales however the situation is confusing and piecemeal.  The definition of a vulnerable adult varies, depending upon the legislation.  The processes and systems to protect older people are based on guidance and lack the resources and drive to ensure comprehensive protection.  Adult Protection Teams are under-funded, under-resourced, and under-staffed.  Increased referrals to some teams would result in crisis.  Abusers escape through the huge gaps that exist e.g. if you neglect someone and kill them you will face a charge under the Domestic Violence, Crimes and and Victims Act 2005.  But you can neglect them, and neglect them, and neglect them ...to the point of death.  This must stop!

Our campaign seeks to achieve a new Act of Parliament that give Adult Protection the same status as that afforded to children.  More..
