A
little background:
In the last number of years the
Domiciliary Care sector has seen increased regulation of both care
agencies and
individual workers. Additionally the onset of personalisation,
with individual budgets and direct payments, has presented new challenges for
a sector that is already supporting increasingly frail and vulnerable
people.
This NEW training pack
has been designed especially for the domiciliary care sector, by people
who have worked in and understand the difficulties and complexities of
delivering quality care in private homes.
It covers the difficult issue of abuse from the perspective of the Home
Help/Domiciliary Care Worker, and provides real-life scenarios of abuse
that are relevant and applicable to the sector, giving invaluable
guidance on how to recognise, tackle and prevent abuse.
Why is this so important?
The one single
issue upon which everyone agrees is that vulnerable older people should
receive care that is sensitive, responsive and does not result in abuse.
Domiciliary Care Agencies and their staff are in a unique and
privileged position in this regard and it is therefore crucial that
providers can demonstrate they have taken all reasonable steps to ensure
protection and quality of care.
By utilising
the Action on Elder Abuse training you can demonstrate to regulators,
commissioners, private funders, and those using your services through
direct payments, that you are committed to high quality care, free of
abuse.
What's in it?
Topics covered include:
* What is abuse and
what does it look like?
* What makes you a good homecarer?
* Discrimination and abuse
* What can I do about abuse?
* Records, confidentiality and other
complicated
issues
Where can it be used?
The pack is 'nation neutral' so it can be used
anywhere in the UK, the Republic of Ireland or beyond without losing its
relevance or key messages.
It can be used by anyone who wants to reinforce or establish the basic
principles of good practice, but where standards or regulation do not
exist, are in their infancy, or are confusing.
It can also be used by those studying towards their S/NVQ in Health and Social Care Level
2, (the Protection of Individuals from Abuse/ Harm modules) and
contains all the necessary information for individuals to complete these
elements.
Additionally Action on Elder Abuse
can provide this training directly to your staff in
specially organized training sessions.

How can it be used?
The pack has
a modular structure so that trainers, supervisors and Managers can choose a specific topic
and deliver a brief session (e.g. one hour) per subject, or care workers
can refer to the information and work through exercises in their own
time. It is deliberately intended to be flexible to cater for the
demands of a busy Home Care section.
The training
pack includes an easy to update workbook, and a multi-lingual DVD.
