Training

We recognise that good quality training can reduce the potential for abuse by careworkers and by others, and there is good research to indicate that training, when coupled to appropriate staffing levels, can improve the quality of care provided in institutions and by domiciliary care staff.

For this reason we provide a range of training options, targeted toward residential care staff, domiciliary care staff, and voluntary and independent sector groups that interact or directly work with older people.  We also provide a short, 15 minute, film on financial abuse that can be watched by anyone.

Courses can be structured according to your needs, can be used as part of induction programmes or refresher sessions and may be structured to fit over one or several days. Learning methods can include handouts, lectures, group discussion, information sharing and small group activities.  We will organise bespoke training for organisations or groups.  To discuss these options please email or telephone 020 8835 9280 and ask for Maggie Evans.

Currently we recommend three 'off the peg' options:

General training:

  • The Time for Action DVD, which is narrated by Tony Robinson of Time Team and Baldrick fame.  It is approximately 15 minutes in duration and covers what is elder abuse, what are the signs, and what someone should do about it.  It is a good 'entry level' product and can be used by individual care staff or volunteers as an introduction or minimum level awareness raising experience.

  • The Time for Action training pack, which can be used in conjunction with the TFA DVD.  It is primarily a cascade training programme, which can be used by supervisors to train groups of staff.  It is in its third version, having been first launched in 2001, and it has been used to train thousands of staff and volunteers.

Domiciliary Care training:

  • The Consequences DVD, which covers the five types of abuse from the perspective of a domiciliary care worker (employed either through an agency or under Direct Payments).  It follows the same format as the Sliding Doors film, offering two options for each abuse example.  One is successful in providing protection and one is less so.  Click here to watch an example of how the film does this.

  • The Home Front training pack which has been specifically designed for domiciliary care.  It can be used in conjunction with the Consequence DVD.  It can be used by individual workers, or delivered in manageable one hour sessions.

General awareness raising:

  • Gardens with Red Roses is an 18 minute DVD which tells the story of Dominic and Debbie who live with Grandad and dream of a home of their own.  But life is not always as it seems and it is only in the closing scene that the truth becomes clear.  An excellent DVD to raise awareness of financial abuse and the dangers of assuming that what appears to be reality is necessarily so.  Click here to watch the film.

Email Maggie for more information on all of these options.

For more training, Action on Elder Abuse are running the following

Time for Action Training course

Would you like to learn how to train your own staff, and have the opportunity to meet and share experiences with managers from other service providers in your locality?

Who is it for?

The training is NOT for learning about elder abuse – it is designed for those already familiar with issues of elder abuse but who are less experienced in training and therefore wishes to gain confidence, skills and materials for training colleagues.

The training is most appropriate for those who will be cascading the training to colleagues who deliver ‘hands-on’ care or direct services (etc care assistants working in domiciliary care, care homes, and day centres).

What do you learn?

How to deliver training on:

·   Where abuse can occur.

·   What abuse is why it occurs, and who abusers can be?

·   Respecting the rights of older people.

·   Confidentiality and disclosure.

·   Employment issues and whistleblowing.

·   Legislation.

What do you get to take away with you?

The training packs – containing:

·   A DVD

·   A set of training notes and overheads to use in a single (full day) training session, or number of shorter sessions.
