Action on Elder Abuse has been very active in seeking to influence the actions of Government and regulators in relation to Adult Safeguarding. Our work triggered the review of No Secrets and In Safe Hands, and we have maintained an active involvement in the deliberations on Safeguarding legislation at national level. We were also significantly involved in the work of the Law Commission in this regard, and have consequently strongly promoted their recommendations.
Although, as our title indicates, we have a focus on older people, the greatest proportion of our work is on Adult Safeguarding in its broadest sense, and our activities consequently benefit all adults at risk of abuse.
As a charity we remain keen to support the work of practitioners in relation to safeguarding and protecting adults at risk of abuse. In that context we consider practitioners to be anyone who has a ‘safeguarding’ role, including police, solicitors, health, local authority, Third Sector, and care providers.
The Safeguarding Practitioners Network is coordinated by Dr John Beer, former Director of Adult Social Services at Southampton and current chair of the AEA Board of Trustees. It is free to join and, and uses both face to face and website resources.
The network has several aims.
- enabling the sharing of information and experiences to
better inform and develop
safeguarding policies, procedures
and practice.
-
helping to disseminate good practice, share experiences and
consolidate the views and
experiences of those working or
volunteering in this crucial area of activity.
-
as a vehicle to share the latest information on the
development of safeguarding legislation,
and seek feedback
on practitioner's needs and views.
