RESPONSE TO GSCC ANNOUNCEMENT ON RECOMMENDATIONS TO REGISTER DOMICILIARY AND RESIDENTIAL SOCIAL CARE WORKERS

The national charity Action on Elder Abuse (AEA) has today welcomed the news that the General Social Care Council (GSCC) has identified domiciliary and residential social care workers as the next priority for registration. The recommendations by the GSCC have been put forward to Government today.

Said chief executive Gary FitzGerald “This is very good news, we have been calling for the registration of social care workers, particularly those in domiciliary care, since 2003. It’s been a long time coming but we hope that when the recommendations are finally implemented the results will have a positive impact on the lives of many dependent people who look to others for some of their most basic needs.

“Abuse thrives in secrecy and domiciliary care, especially, provides an environment where malpractice and abuse can more easily take place without detection. We need to be looking at every mechanism available to ensure the safest conditions possible. Registration, if it’s underpinned with sound training and robust vetting, will be another positive step in the right direction”.

As a member of the GSCC Stakeholder Steering Group Action on Elder Abuse will be providing input on the recommendations, as part of its commitment to supporting the positive work of the GSCC.
