RESPONSE TO CSCI PROPOSALS FOR QUALITY RATINGS OF CARE PROVIDERS

The national charity Action on Elder Abuse (AEA) has today welcomed the Commission for Social Care Inspection’s (CSCI) proposals to implement a scheme which will introduce quality ratings for care providers in England .

The system, which will score services on a scale from 1 – 4, will give the public an ‘at a glance’ picture of how providers are rated overall.

Said chief executive of Action on Elder Abuse, Gary FitzGerald “This is great news and we welcome this initiative by CSCI. The new system, a well-known and well-understood concept, will introduce yet more transparency for informing a discerning public and that has to be a good thing.

“If we’re selective in our choice of hotels – and those establishments are keen to vie for high ratings as an indication of their quality and reliability – then it follows that service providers in the care industry should welcome an opportunity to similarly demonstrate what they have to offer.

“Having a system which lets people compare services is both good for the client as well as keeping the industry at an optimum. We shall be making a contribution to the consultation and look forward to the outcome of that”.

The consultation, which will last for three months and closes on 14 November 2006 , is open to the public for contribution. Pending the outcome it is anticipated the new rating system will be implemented in mid-2007.
