More from the News Five years ago it was hard to find reports of elder abuse reaching the attention of the media but, through our hard work, we have succeeded in getting the issue onto the agenda of broadcasters and publishers. Primarily the abuse of older people still only reaches local or regional newspapers, but this is slowly changing as we get programmes like Panorama taking an interest. A word of caution is that media reporting is not necessarily a good way of judging abuse. We know from our helpline that two thirds of abuse takes place behind the family door, but most media reports are about care homes. This is possibly because abuse is easier to address and report from within institutions and this may therefore not accurately reflect the realities of abuse. |
