What Happened on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day 2007

Buchanan Court Care Home

Sudbury Hill. Harrow

On Friday 15th June 2007 several staff and residents dressed up to a 1970’s theme and paid for the privilege of doing so. Those who did not participate were fined. The home activities organiser pulled out all the stops and arrived at work dressed as a punk – she even travelled to work and back home without changing.

Other events held during the day were a disco sherry morning (complete with a glitter ball lighting the room and helping to set the mood), a raffle and a homemade cake sale.

Back Row: Peter Clarke, Claire Williams, Karen Littleford

Front Row: Sarah Bland, Joanne Ellison .

This year saw colleagues from organisations including Shropshire Partners in Care (SPIC), Shropshire County Council’s Adult Protection Team (SCC), Shropshire County PCT, Bowbrook House Residential Home and The Care Workforce Development Partnership (CWDP) all working together to help raise awareness of elder abuse and also raise funds for Action on Elder Abuse. In Shropshire , 59% of Adult Protection Referrals made last year involved the abuse of an older person so we were all keen to highlight this issue. Participants undertook their first white water rafting experience at JJ Canoeing and Rafting at Mile End Mill, Llangollen.

They had a musical evening in June: staff arranged songs, dance, and drinks, as well as a raffle and guess the name of the dog competition.

The BBQ started at 4pm and we had 60 relatives and members of the public turn up to support us.  We had a Bric and Brac, Cake, European food (which was all donated by various members of staff) book and clothes stalls.  As well as these stalls we had a test your strength machine were people we asked to hit the base and ring the bell prizes were given to all those that managed it. Candyfloss was also sold and we had staff and relatives give up there time to entertain all the residents with several hours of Karaoke and dancing. Eva Williams from Hayes End Methodist Church gave up a couple of hours of her time when she played her accordion, and Mrs Wagwala the daughter of one of our residents Yashoda Wagwala gave up some of her time to run a henna stall The whole evening was rounded up with a fabulas fireworks display.

Colleagues from Careforce Head Office and Mears Welwyn & Hatfield worked together to plan a day of events in order to raise awareness of elder abuse on Friday 15th June.

Staff from Careforce Head Office and Mears Welwyn manned a stand in Stevenage town centre for the day, in order to talk to local residents about what elder abuse is, how it can be prevented and what to do if it is happening.

Awareness-raising events were organised by the companies across the country, including coffee mornings, quizzes, raffles and projects to support older people such as gardening for isolated service users.

The stand was visited by Mayor Graham Clark and it was well received by local residents.

Abergaw Manor did a Balloon race, they  received a telephone call to say that one of their balloon's was found on a beach in north wales, also one was found on a farm in Carmarthen, which is quiet a distance from the home.
