Conferences: elder abuse

A major activity for AEA is hosting conferences on issues related to elder abuse and the adult protection agenda.  Throughout each year we organise conferences on specific themes (e.g. medication control and abuse) or about specific services (e.g. sheltered housing), all intended to highlight specific issues or increase the knowledge and awareness of practitioners.

In addition we organise a major two day residential conference each March, which focuses on key activities.  This has become the major adult protection event of the year, invariably opened by a Government Minister and appropriately topical.

We also regularly attend and speak at conferences organised by other organisations, either focusing on our knowledge and experiences of elder abuse in particular, or on our wider knowledge of the adult protection field.  Email or telephone 020 8835 9280 if you wish to book one of our speakers.

AEA National Conference 2010
22 & 23 March 2010
The University of Warwick

Setting the Agenda - Adult Safeguarding Conference

The largest annual safeguarding conference run by Action on Elder Abuse is happening on the 22nd/23rd March 2010 at Warwick University.

With a general election looming, the continued rollout of the transformation agenda, the completion of CQC's thematic inspections into safeguarding, the uncertainty arising from the No Secrets review, the freeze of the next steps registration of social care staff etc, attendance should be essential for all working or interested in this rapidly changing agenda!

Confirmed speakers include Sir Roger Singleton of the ISA, Dot Gibson, General Secretary of The National Pensioners Convention, Louise Close of In Control, Martin Green of ECCA, Richard Banks, Michael Keegan of the GMC, Joanna Perry of the CPS, Jo Williams of the CQC, David Congdon of Mencap and Margaret Haywood.

Confirmed workshops include:

  • NMC's new guidance on raising concerns

  • The review of the Welsh In Safe Hands safeguarding guidance

  • Evaluation of legal instruments such as LPA, Court of Protection in
    protecting adults at risk.

  • How do we provide dignity for people using health services

  • An examination of where safeguarding interventions lie in tackling the cycle of
    domestic violence.

  • The Disability Hate Crime Network

  • Best practice in investigating crimes in regulated settings

  • The Eden principles of residential care

  • The nature and quality of care given to adults with dementia

  • The relationship between patient safety and safeguarding

  • A consideration of how personalisation can engage with regulated care.

  • The role of advocacy in promoting safeguarding within the transformation agenda

  • Achieving a joined up criminal justice approach to safeguarding

This conference poses the question, how in an increasingly shifting environment do we continue to focus on achieving a society where there is a zero tolerance of adult abuse, and where it is identified it is addressed?
