About Us

Our origins

Based in London, Action on Elder Abuse is a national organisation that operates across the four nations of the United Kingdom.  It also provides support within Ireland.

It was established in 1993 by a group of practitioners from health and social care, academics and representatives of the voluntary sector who were concerned about the lack of information and assistance for those who were abused or were at risk of abusing.

The charity highlights these issues by running a unique helpline providing information, advice and support to victims and others who are concerned about or have witnessed abuse.

As a multi-disciplinary membership organisation, it aims to prevent the abuse of older people by raising awareness; encouraging education; promoting research; and collecting and disseminating information. It does this by providing up-to-date information for its members; running conferences on elder abuse and related issues; giving presentations to a wide range of organisations; producing leaflets, resource materials and reports for practitioners and the public; and acting as a resource for television, radio and the press.

We are funded exclusively through grants, donations, membership subscriptions and a 'friends scheme' whereby people make regular standing order donations to our work.
