Our services

We provide a range of services to older people, their families and friends, and also to organisations that interact with them.  In recent years this has resulted in a number of major developments which have furthered the understanding of elder abuse in the UK, and also the way in which abuse should be addressed.  These have included:

  • the conclusions of the House of Commons Health Select Committee Inquiry into elder abuse.  AEA was a major contributor to the inquiry and this resulted in a number of major recommendations to Government on what needs to occur in response to elder abuse;

  • AEA were responsible for recommending a Prevalence Study into the extent of elder abuse within the UK, which was funded by Comic Relief and the Department of Health.  We were a major contributor to the oversight of this project;

  • AEA strongly lobbied for and succeeded in getting a Government commitment to a review of the No Secrets guidance on adult protection systems in England, and as a consequence a similar review of In Safe Hands in Wales was initiated.

Our services and activities

We have a wide variety of services available to help people, families and professionals address the issue of elder abuse, and these activities include:

  • Operating a national free phone Helpline providing advice, information and support to those who have experienced or are concerned about abuse, with similar helplines for Southern Cross Healthcare, advocacy organisations, and an adult abuse helpline in Essex

  •  Bringing the issue out from behind closed doors through our active work with the media, and consequently helping more people recognise the signs of abuse

  •  Providing training and information to local community groups, older people's action groups, care providers, regulators and advocates

  • Training key workers and practitioners in the care and health industry, to raise the levels of care that older adults receive.

  •  Organising conferences throughout the year on issues relating to elder abuse and adult protection.  Our National two day conference each March is the major adult protection event of the year.

  • Working in partnership with organisations and companies throughout the UK to reach those older people most at risk

  •  Lobbying Governments and Assemblies in both the UK and Ireland for changes in legislation and improvements to care standards of older people.

We have been described as a 'critical friend' to governments and this reflects our willingness to positively assist politicians to achieve genuine adult protection, but to also criticise and challenge where necessary.  We interact with Westminster, the Welsh and Northern Irish Assemblies, and with the Scottish Parliament.  We also contribute to developments in Ireland.   This is a major function of our work because it seeks to positively influence and affect the lives of hundreds of older people throughout the four nations.
