Action on Elder Abuse
Home

Although we are a comparatively small organisation in staff numbers we seek to achieve a great deal in support of adults who experience abuse.  In part this involves providing a number of direct services, such as our helplines, our good practice database (in conjunction with PAVA) and our training, but also through the provision of information, downloads and links to other organisations.

This section consequently covers a range of activities and is constantly being updated with new information and services as these become available.

If you are searching for information on abuse, or organisations who can additionally provide information or support, this section should assist you.

Advocacy toolkit

The Advocacy toolkit is the culmination of three years work on an advocacy training project undertaken by Action on Elder Abuse and funded by the Department of Health. Advocacy Schemes have a critical role of supporting older people in the prevention of elder abuse. The toolkit, produced in conjunction with Action for Advocacy, questions the relationship between advocacy and elder abuse and explores how advocacy can be used to empower older people to tackle abuse, protect and stop abusive situations arising.  Click here.

Care Home advice

Television programmes often contain distressing and shocking information on the reality of some care home provision  and the inability of the current regulation system to guarantee protection from abusive situations.  It is important however to remember that most of our care homes provide good quality care, from people and organisations who are genuine in what they do.  Some however continue to be appalling.  To help you in this situation we have produced a simple guide to what you should consider when looking at a care home for yourself or a loved one, and what you should do if you are concerned about abuse.   Click here.

Good Practice Database

The Good Practice Database is an ongoing project that gives adult protection/safeguarding staff the opportunity to highlight activities of good practice and share it with colleagues throughout the country.  You can log in through this portal and either post good practice examples, download examples, or make contact with colleagues to obtain further information.  Click here.

Helplines

Action on Elder Abuse operate the UK and Ireland's only national, freephone helpline for anyone concerned in any way about the abuse of older people.  Although it cannot provide legal advice, it can provide information on the nature of elder abuse and indicate what action might be taken in response to abuse or to prevent it.  In addition we operate a freephone helpline for Southern Cross Healthcare, the largest provider of residential care in the UK.  We are also piloting an Adult Abuse helpline within Essex, which provides advice and information to any adult who may be at risk of or experiencing abuse.  Click here.

Domiciliary Care toolkit

The United Kingdom Homecare Association
and AEA have launched a  comprehensive information toolkit on adult protection in the homecare sector.   It is primarily designed to give an understanding of the issues surrounding adult protection and signpost homecare providers across the UK to everything they need to know when writing or reviewing procedures and policies to protect vulnerable adults from abuse.
The resource assists agencies and senior staff in equipping their staff with policies, procedures and knowledge when dealing with situations of suspected abuse.  Click here.
